IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A WOMAN TO BE BORN WITHOUT A VAGINA AND HAVE NEVER UNDERGONE MENSTRUATION?!

Yesterday I read in the papers the story about a man in the south west of Nigeria who filed for divorce against his wife of 4 years on the odd yet shocking fact that his wife had no VAGINA!? He also asserted that for years he was scammed by her & her family because he wasn't told about this prior to when they got married. All the same the court had no choice but to terminate the marriage.

Funny thing is most people didn't want to buy the gist, they felt it was a made up story by the husband. But nothing in this world is new, so I decided to make a little online research of mine and alas, the predicament faced by the lady isn't unusual. She's suffering from an uncommon congenital disorder called "Müllerian agenesis, also called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome or MRKH."

WHAT IS MRKH?
It is a congenital malformation characterized by a failure of the Müllerian duct to develop, resulting in a missing uterus (womb) and variable degrees of vaginal hypoplasia( underdevelopment or incomplete development of the vagina.) of its upper portion.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS.
An individual with this condition is hormonally normal; that is, they will enter puberty with development of secondary sexual characteristics including growing pubic hair, development of the breast etc . Ovaries are intact and ovulation usually occurs. However in some cases the vagina is shortened and intercourse may, in some cases, be difficult and painful. Medical examination supported by gynecologic ultrasonography demonstrates a complete or partial absence of the cervix, uterus, and vagina.

So basically If there is no uterus, people with MRKH cannot carry a pregnancy. However, it is possible for them to have genetic offspring by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy.

People with MRKH typically discover the condition when, during puberty years, the menstrual cycle does not start (primary amenorrhoea). Some find out earlier through surgeries for other conditions, such as a hernia.
CAUSES
The cause is clearly genetically. This involves the lack of production of a particular WNT4 gene which is required to form the mullerian duct in the uterine walls of the woman.

PREVALENCE
The estimated prevalence is 1 in 4000-5000 females with XX chromosomes.
TREATMENT
A number of treatments have become available to create a functioning vagina, yet in the absence of a uterus currently no surgery is available to make pregnancy possible. The recent development of engineered vaginas using the patient's own cells has resulted in fully functioning vaginas capable of menstruation and orgasm in a number of patients showing promise of fully correcting this condition in some of the sufferers.

PS: so folks there you have it. I guess now you can now understand that some things aren't as mystical as they appear to be. For everything under the earth there's always an explanation. Enjoy your day!
